Our team continues to build a culture that encourages and fosters personal and professional development. As we’ve continued to grow, we’ve come to understand our shared empathy, support, and wisdom are keys to success.
In the spirit of National Mentoring Month, we asked our Account Coordinators what they value in mentorship and how the time and energy of those around them aids in their personal and professional success. Below are our four takeaways.
1. Encourage asking questions
One of the most stressful parts of a new job is the unknown. From day one, my team encouraged me to ask any and all questions. They understood that being afraid to ask questions not only leaves young professionals potentially isolated and confused but misses opportunities to provide insight about company culture and functionality. Not only have I found excellent guidance when I reach out with questions, I also gain further insight on the overall strategy behind the task.
2. Share the “why”
One of the ways I’ve been able to expand my skill set as a young professional is having mentors explain the “why” and “how” behind strategies. I have learned to embrace teaching moments and explore ideas further because my team takes the time to provide context. Mentors who encourage us to fully understand a topic or assigned task help set us up for success in the present moment and beyond.
3. Lead by example
We all have a first day, week, month, and year in a new job, and I’ve learned the transition into a “first” job isn’t always seamless. It’s in the smallest moments — whether on a client call, sending an important email, or tackling a new task — that I am lucky to turn to my team members who have been in my shoes. Watching them lead by example and encouraging me to be my best self continues to create confidence in my work and communication.
4. Remember that young professionals are watching the women around them
Pierce PR is currently an all-female team. As a young professional, I have found it invaluable to have a female perspective as I navigate a new industry, as well as my first job postgrad remotely. I feel more empowered to continue my personal and professional growth knowing I have a team of role models who are supportive, passionate and *badass*.
